(because we wanted to make a long story short)
It all started with a phone call. Kristi called me to see
if I would be interested in getting her dad's barbecue pit off her mother's
patio. The deal was, it had to be done that day or it was going to
Goodwill, and it had to be replaced with a $40 Lil' Smokey. I went in
halves with a friend named Teddy. After several months of failed attempts
at making anything edible and still having a very large time
"learning" how to smoke in my backyard, Kevin got his own pit for
a surprise birthday present. Custom made by "El Gallo", the
welder that works for me. With pipe donated by Trey & Amanda Bell...
trouble was born.
So, from March of '04 through the heat of summer and the
cold of winter and into the Spring of '05 we barbecued. And barbecued. And
barbecued some more. We became quite good at some things, we thought, and
we were downright terrible at others. We all still remember the first goat,
just ask. Then came our first thought of competition barbecue. Smokin' on
the Rio , Mercedes , Texas was our first gig. We made it through an all
night pouring rain and 50 degrees and lots of Keystone Light with a slight
punch from our new friend… … Bulleit Bourbon !!! (pronounced
bullit because we said so). Two plastic trophies later and we were PRO-fession-ALLs . |
